Trip Report: Sawtooth Splitboard Yurt Trip

This January, I finally did my first splitboard yurt trip to the heart of the Sawtooth Mountain Range of Idaho.

I was awarded the chance to guide some clients after my close friend and fellow splitboard guide, Jamie Weeks, reserved the legendary Willams Peak Hut.

With a promising forecast for snow and cold temps, we headed into the range that I have been wanting to ride in since I moved to the West.  Due to the poor structure of the snowpack we would ultimalty have to keep or decent lines to mellower terrain. This, however did not dampen the spirit of our crew as we found endless fields of untouched pow to rip!!

The 5 mile tour to the yurt was mellow and we had great views of the awesome terrain we where going to ride. Hiring porters to carry the bulk of our food, kept our packs light and enabled us to get to camp with plenty of daylight and energy to ride that afternoon.

Traveling into the vast amount of splitboard terrain the Sawtooth Range has to offer was quite easy and our approaches to the alpine bowls and gladed runs where kept to a minimum thanks to the central location of the yurts. The Williams Peak Hut’s location put us in striking distance to  the dozens of couloirs that line the alpine cirques.  With a more favorable snowpack, we could have easily ridden a number of these gems.

After four days of touring, riding pow, and dining on amazing food that was prepared by our yurt chef, Rachael, we headed back to the town of Stanley to eat, drink, and soak in the area hot springs.

Stay tuned for the next trip to Sawtooth’s, I am definitely going back!!!!!  Oh yeah, the yurt has a wood fired sauna…….
